PRESIDENT Marcos has signed a new law allowing a high school graduate to earn a college degree after at least five years of work experience.

Various quarters described the new piece of legislation as a “game changer” in this Southeast Asian nation.

Republic Act (RA) No. 12124 would allow more Filipinos to receive “alternative pathways to their education.”

It is otherwise known as the “Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program.”

The Second Congressional Commission on Education, which is tasked to evaluate and assess the performance of the Philippine education sector, had earlier recommended the construction of child development centers (CDCs) in fourth and fifth municipalities across the country.

To qualify for the program, one must have at least five years of experience and must pass a comprehensive competitive competency assessment to earn equivalent credits.

The Commission on Higher Education will have to conduct rigorous evaluation to assess the applicant’s professional knowledge and skills.

This is to ensure that the applicant meets the academic standards required for degree equivalency.
