IT is heartening to know that drowning incidents just numbered 31 during the 2025 Holy Week celebration, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Actually, the figure reflected a decrease of 28 percent compared to last year’s 43 drowning incidents throughout the country.

Of the 31 incidents, 19 involved adults, while the rest involved minors, said PNP information chief Col. Randulf Tuano.

And Colonel Tuano described this year’s celebration of the Holy Week, or Semana Santa in Pilipino, as generally peaceful.

Some quarters attributed this to the deployment of some 69,000 police officers and men across the country.

In deploying thousands of PNP personnel, the government wanted to ensure the safety and well-being of the people during the observance of Christendom’s Holy Week.

During summer in the Philippines, Filipinos, including children and the elderly, go to beaches and swimming pools to beat the sweltering heat.

And Holy Week is usually celebrated in March or April, both summer months in this Southeast Asian nation of English-speaking people.

And this year, the heat index in some parts of the country has been reaching record levels, forcing residents in these areas to go to beach resorts.

Hopefully, however, these privately-owned resorts are capable of ensure the safety of their guests, who include minors and senior citizens.
