THE Department of Labor and Employment yesterday reminded that Filipino workers who worked on Labor Day, May 1, should be paid double their daily wage for the first eight hours.

In an advisory, Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III reminded employers in the private sector to observe the mandated wages on May 1, which is a regular holiday.

“Employees who worked on Labor Day should be paid double their daily wage for the first eight hours,” he said.

Bello further reminded that for work done more than eight hours (overtime work), workers must be paid an additional 30 percent of their hourly rate on said day.

Meanwhile, employees who work on a regular holiday that also falls on their rest day should be paid an additional 30 percent of their basic wage of 200 percent.

For work done more than eight hours (overtime work) during a regular holiday that also falls on their rest day, employees shall be paid an additional 30 percent of their hourly rate on said day.

Workers who will not report for work on Labor Day should still be paid 100 percent of their salary for that day.

The DOLE Labor Advisory also reminded that establishments that have “totally closed or ceased operation” during the community quarantine period amid the pandemic are exempted from the payment of the holiday pay.
