DepEd’s turnover rites
PRESIDENT Marcos’ appointment of a senator as new Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) has given his administration a much-needed boost in the eyes of the people.
Thus, educators, parents, students and members of Congress applauded last Thursday when Sen. Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara assumed office as top honcho of the education department.
Various quarters described Angara’s assumption of the top DepEd post as “timely,” noting that the government is in the midst of improving the quality of Philippine education.
Particularly in public elementary and high schools across the country.
In accepting his new role, from lawmaker to DepEd secretary, Angara underscored the importamce pf building on the efforts of his predecessor, Vice President Sara Duterte.
Ms. Duterte officially turned over the DepEd leadership to the youthful-looking Angara during simple rites at the agency’s central office in Pasig City.
“We will build from what you have already started,” Angara. son of the late Senate President Edgardo “Edong” Angara, told the lady vice president from Mindanao.
As a well-meaning Filipino, we share the view of the new education secretary that education is a pillar of the country’s progress.
And it is only through the nation’s efforts that education will be improved and made more effective for the sake of the country and people.
But Secretary Angara urged the Filipino people to allow us some time to dig deeper in the coming days as they outline their key priorities.
This will be good for the nation and the more than 110 million Filipinos, particularly the students and pupils.
