TODAY, November 4, is a “Day of National Mourning” in the Philippines, a favorite “sparring partner” of typhoons and storms.

The national flag will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset at all government buildings and installations in the country and abroad.

President Marcos declared the national day of mourning for the victims of Storm “Kristine” in Proclamation No. 728 dated October 30.

The howler affected 8.5 million families, killing 150 people and destroying P7.3 billion worth of infrastructure and agriculture.

In declaring November 4 as “Day of National Mourning” in the country, President Marcos said in the proclamation:

“The nation deeply mourns this tragic loss and joins the families and loved one of our departed brothers and sisters in this moment of immense sorrow.”

President Marcos called on the Filipino people to offer prayers for the eternal repose of the souls of the victims of Kristine and Typhoon Leon.

Under Republic Act (RA) No. 8491, the display of the Philippine flag at half-mast is a sign of mourning during tragedies of national significance.

The declaration will encourage everybody to work hand-in-hand “para mapabilis ang pagtulong sa mga biktima ng dalawang bagyo.”
