Converge downs Blackwater in thriller

JUSTIN Arana scored four of his 13 points in the final 30 seconds — including the game-winner — as Converge brought down Blackwater, 92-90, to clinch a quarterfinals berth.in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Arana’s heroics came after completed a three-point play to put Blackwater ahead, 90-88, with 47 seconds left.

Arana scored a lay-up to tie the score at 90-all with 34 seconds remaining.

In the ensuing play, Arama blocked Casio’s jumper and then hit the game-winning basket with 10 seconds left.

With the win, Converge rose to 5-6 for solo eighth.

Maverick Ahanmisi led the way with 18 points and eight assists.

Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser had a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Bossing, who suffered their fourth straight setback and 5-5 overall.

Later, Magnolia blasted undermanned Rair or Shine, 118-87, for its sixth straigbt win.

Seven players, led by Jerrick Ahanmisi and Jio Jalalon, scored in double figures for the Hotshots, who led from start to finish.

The victories of both Converge and Magnolia completed the eight-team quarterfinal cast and slammed the door on Rain or Shine (4-7), North Port (3-7) and Phoenix Super LPG (3-7).

They join early qualifiers San Miguel Beermen (9-2), TNT Tropang Giga (8-3), Magnolia Hotshots (7-3), Ginebra Kings (7-3), Meralco Bolts (6-4), NLEX Road Warriors (5-5) and Blackwater Bossing (5-5).

As the top two teams, San Miguel and TNT are assured of the twice-to-beat bonus in the quarterfinals.
