Class opening
SCHOOL year (SY) 2024-2025 starts Monday, July 29, with millions of students trooping to various schools for the opening of classes.
Records show that 18,170,310 elementary and high school students have enrolled for the new school year, which ends on April 15, 2025.
Last Friday, President Marcos ordered the Department of Education (DepEd) to “do everything” to start classes on Monday as scheduled.
However, the Chief Executive was quick to say that it would be up to school authorities to decide whether or not to postpone the opening of classes,
Note that some public schools were still flooded, while others were being used by typhoon victims as evacuation centers.
The opening of classes in July instead of August followed the government’s decision in May to gradually revert to the old school calendar.
Under the old schedule, schools opened in June and ended in March.
“Dapat bumalik tayo sa dating school calendar dahil napakainit pagdating ng Abril at Hunyo bunga ng climate change,” a parent said.
“Hindi bale sa private schools dahil ang mga kwarto nila ay may mga airconditioning units. Sa public schools, ni electric fan ay wala,” he added.
Holding classes in April and May is a no-no, according to parents, teachers and students.
