CEU posts back-to-back wins

CENTRO Escolar University posted back-back victories over Ateneo de Manila University, 43-36, and erstwhile unbeaten Arandia College, 72-70, in the Manila Best Tournament basketball championship at the Trinity University of Asia gym in Quezon City.

Handled by former national playe-turned-coach Britt Carlo Reroma and assistant coach Ricky Alcantara, the Scorpions learned on Renell Jopillo, Medmin Ariate, Rency Bayguin and Gab Gamboa to remain as the only unbeaten team in the 14-team tournament organized by retired PBA referee Joey Calungcaguin.

Jopillo, who was named as “Best Player of the Game”, was the biggest hero for CEU in both victories with 12 points against Ateneo and 21 points against Arandia.

In other Sunday’s results, Letran College crushed Olivarez College, 79-56 and Our Lady of Fatima University outsteadied Mapua Univesrity, 69-66.

Best Player of the Game Natt Montecilla and James Jumao-as scored 11 points apiece for the Intramuros-based Knights, who improved their win-loss record to 2-3 overall.

The Phoenix of coach Ralph Rivera relied on African recruit Mamadou Toure in beating the Cardinals and claiming their second win in thiree outings.

Toure, who was later named “Best Player of the Game”, scattered 23 points and Bell powers Chery Tiggo over PLDT12 rebounds. for the Phoenix.
