Blending humor with heartfelt drama

NEARLY two decades ago in 2008, director Roi Paolo Calilong started in theater and became a regular actor in PETA (Philippine Educational Theater Association).
The discipline in theater undoubtedly helped Roi when he eventually transitioned to directing.
“Even the art form, how to mount the scenes, really helped me,” said Roi. “That became my strength and I was able to apply that when I started to become an assistant director.”
Eventually, Roi became an assistant director for television and worked with the likes of Bert de Leon, Phillip Lazaro and Chris Martinez.
“That’s why comedy, sitcom and gag shows ang naging training ko,” direk Roi disclosed.
Roi also assisted direk Chris in the iWant TFC TV series, “Mga Batang Poz” (2019).
Producer-writer Rosanna Hwang of Kapitana Entertainment Media was looking for an assistant director for her sophomore production venture, “Isang Komedya sa Langit.”
Roi was recommended by Tacloban-based character actor Butchoy Ubaldo, who became the former’s student in PETA, where he taught a workshop in the pandemic.
When Roi met Rosanna, fondly called as “Kapitana,” the latter told him she also needs a director. He honestly told her he has not been given a chance yet to direct for the big screen.
Rossanna wrote the script for “Isang Komedya sa Langit,” financed the film, supervised the production, worked as costume designer, costume master and even as location manager.
She earlier produced “The Women of Tonta Club” (2021), a comedy about the friendship and challenges of women working together in a socio-civic organization. Nova Villa, Tetchie Agbayani and Tina Paner lead the cast, with Xian Lim at the helm.
Get ready to laugh, cry and be inspired because Kapitana Entertainment Media proudly presents “Isang Komedya sa Langit,” a historical fiction-comedy set in the Spanish era. The film is uniquely a heartwarming blend of comedy, fantasy and drama.
Set to premiere nationwide on May 28, “Isang Komedya sa Langit” promises an unforgettable cinematic journey filled with joy, reflection and a touch of magic.
At the heart of the film is veteran actor Jaime Fabregas, who takes on the role of Father Emanuel Garcia. Known for his powerful portrayals of clergy in Philippine cinema, Jaime once again delivers a performance that resonates deeply.
Rosanna personally sought out the film’s leading talents. Jaime came highly recommended by Frasco Mortiz, son of the comic legend and director Edgar Mortiz.
“You have to get him,” Frasco told Rosanna.
While playing a priest may be familiar territory for Jaime, who admits the character of Father Garcia brought a fresh challenge to the story of “Isang Komedya sa Langit.”
“Hindi ko na mabilang kung ilang beses na ako gumanap bilang pari,” said Jaime. “Well, may challenge pa rin kase hindi naman lahat ng pari ay may pare-parehong character.”
Drawing from personal experiences, Jaime revealed that he once served as an altar boy at the Naga Cathedral, a connection that undoubtedly adds depth and authenticity to his performance.
Joining him is the ever-charismatic Carmi Martin, who plays Naty, a part originally offered to Nova Villa.
Embracing the project without hesitation, Carmi saw great promise in the film’s story. Widely loved for her comedic flair, she showcases her versatility by diving into emotionally charged scenes, even shedding tears on set.
Carmi was personally recruited by Rosanna through the Barangay Chairman of Magallanes Village in Makati, an effort that highlights her passion and hands-on commitment to the craft of filmmaking.
Also starring in the film is rising talent Aki Blanco, portraying Brother Marco. Following his acclaimed role in “The Last 12 Days,” Aki, managed by Tyronne Escalante, continues to build his reputation with another moving performance.
When asked what he would change if he could revisit the past, Aki reflected candidly: “Siguro po, kung may babaguhin man ako, gusto ko bumalik sa pagiging teenager ko.
“Kasi nung teenager ako, simple lang ang buhay ko… gusto ko lang balikan ‘yung mga gano’ng panahon kasi sa panahon ngayon, puro social media na and puro cell phone,” Aki expressed.
The film’s ensemble cast is further strengthened by performances from Edgar Allan “EA” Guzman, John Medina and Gene Padilla, each adding their own vibrant flavor to the story.
Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind film that dares to blend humor with heartfelt drama. “Isang Komedya sa Langit” is more than just a movie, it’s a reflection on life, faith and love – a cinematic experience you won’t want to miss.
