Blazers, Knights hurdle rivals

DEFENDING champion College of Saint Benilde and Letran bested separate foes to open their second round campaigns on a high note in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.

The Lady Blazers topped Jose Rizal University, 25-16, 28-26, 19-25, 25-13, while the Lady Knights overcame San Beda, 25-22, 25-21, 27-29, 30-28.

Benilde and Letran moved up to 8-2 in the standings.

Cristy Ondangan led the Lady Blazers with 13 points.

The Lady Bombers, meanwhile, suffered their ninth loss in 10 matches.

Rookie Sheena Sarie, the No. 1 scorer in the first round, was solid for the Lady Knights with 24 points, including two blocks, while Gia Maquilang and Judiel Nitura added 15 and 12 points, respectively.

The loss spoiled the return of Angel Habacon, who had 20 points, including two service aces, and 11 receptions, after missing the last seven matches of the first round due to a a full tear MCL on her right knee. The Lady Red Spikers are now at 0-10.

In the men’s division, Axel Book had 19 points and 17 receptions San Beda rallied past Letran, 20-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-17, 27-25, for a winning start in its second round campaign.
