WITH the onset of the rainy season, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology – National Capital Region (BJMP-NCR) is now focused on health issues and illnesses in jail facilities during this season.

According to BJMP-NCR director Chief Supt. Clint Russel Tangeres, they had overcome the summer illnesses like skin asthma, irritations, and rashes, and boils. This time, jail facility officials and personnel are taking active measures to prevent the dreaded leptospirosis that usually follows after flooding.

“Meron pa rin tayong mga facilities na binabaha, kagaya ng Manila City Jail, Caloocan City Jail, dyan sa CAMANAVA area at may ilan sa MMDJ (Metro Manila District Jail) sa Bicutan,Taguig,” he told this writer.

In several previous instances, some of these areas he added, experienced waist-deep flood prompting wardens to evacuate them to higher grounds.

And with floodwaters remaining in cells for some time, concerns will be on PDLs having open wounds making them prone to the deadly leptospirosis.

Tangeres said they have medical personnel in respective jails ready in these situations.

“Alam na nila ang mga preventive measures at kung may nakitaan ng symptoms, agad-agad may medical responses na,” the BJMP official said.

Other illnesses among PDLs include influenza.

The Metro Jail chief expressed his gratitude to concerned local government units (LGUs) for addressing the flooding problems of the facilities.
