Batangas ‘cop killer’ falls in Guimaras

CAMP GEN. MIGUEL MALVAR, Batangas – A “most wanted person” (MWP) who hid for 30 years from the law accused of killing a policeman was arrested by the joint police forces in Buenavista, Guimaras, according to a report.

A report of Batangas Police Provincial Office (BPPO) Director P/Col. Pedro D. Soliba to Police Regional Office (PRO) Calabarzon (Cavite/Laguna/Batangas/Rizal/Quezon) Director P/Brig. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., the suspect, 61, single, a native of Tanauan City, and currently residing in Barangay East Valencia, Buenavista, Guimaras.

The jobless suspect was nabbed based on a warrant of arrest by the combined forces of the Tanauan City Police Station, Anini-y Municipal Police Station-Antique Police Provincial Office (APPO), and Jordan Municipal Police Station-Guimaras PPO at 9:15 a.m. on January 23.

The accused was the suspect in the shooting of SPO2 Herminigildo Mercado on March 19, 1993, in Bgy. Balele, Tanauan City, Batangas, which resulted in the immediate death of the victim.

The accused has been named “MWP” at the national level with a reward of P60,000 from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

The arrested accused is currently in the custody of the Tanauan City Police station lock-up cell.

“We commend the police for arresting the suspect. Let’s remember that anyone who commits a crime is liable to the law. We continue to encourage the public to cooperate with the authorities if you have information that will solve the cases and arrest the people involved in the crime,” Soliba said.
