THE City Council of Manila has approved an ordinance declaring August 4 of every year as “Araw ni Carlos Yulo” or Carlos Yulo Day.

Authored by Sixth District Councilor Salvador Phillip Lacuna, the ordinance was also in commemoration of August as the “Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa.”

The ordinance does not mention the word ‘holiday’ at all. Therefore, students and employees in the entire city of Manila are still required to attend school and work on this day. Carlos Yulo Day is simply a day of commemoration. So, while it is a regular day, there will be activities to honor the pride that Caloy has brought to our country, with the hope of inspiring our citizens to excel in their respective fields,” Councilor Philip Lacuna explained.

The ordinance, while awaiting the signature of Manila Mayor Dr. Honey Lacuna-Pangan, traced the life and career of Carlos Edriel P. Yulo as a homegrown sports prodigy of Manila, where he studied at Aurora A. Quezon Elementary School in Malate, represented Manila several times in the Palarong Pambansa, and pursued college education at Adamson University in Manila.

For her part, Mayor Lacuna said “Carlos Yulo’s Olympic gold medals’ weight and value are beyond measure. His name is forever etched in the memories and hearts of all Filipinos.”

“Among the best we can do to express our gratitude is to honor Caloy, push for more support for student-athletes and community athletes, and respect his right to privacy,” Mayor Lacuna added.
