Abu Sayyaf leader killed in Basilan encounter
A LEADER of the Abu Sayyaf Group on Friday was killed in a gunfight with Scout Ranger troopers in Basilan province.
Joint Task Force-Basilan commander Brig. Gen. Domingo Gobway identified the slain Abu boss as Razmil Jannatul alias “Abu Khubayb.”
Gobway said Jannatul was a notorious Basilan-based ASG sub-leader who replaced Furuji Indama as the top leader of the group following the latter’s death in October 2020.
The official said Jannatul was killed in an encounter last Friday at Sitio Center in Bgy. Baiwas, Sumisip town.
Soldiers of the 5th Scout Ranger Battalion were conducting combat patrol when they met the group of bandits led by Jannatul.
The firefight lasted for about 15 minutes until the bandits fled, leaving behind their slain comrade.
The body of Jannatul was recovered while troops were scouring the encounter site.
Soldiers are pursuing the fleeing followers of Jannatul.
