A slow burn partnership that proves to be hotter

ONLY in her sophomore directorial outing, Catherine “CC” Camarillo cannot be any happier that she was able to deliver what she initially envisioned for the Barbie Forteza and David Licauco big screen starrer, ‘That Kind of Love.’
To begin with, the personalities of her lead stars complement each other. “David being very quiet, being very gentleman while Barbie being bubbly,” direk CC commented.
“When I looked at them and gave them instructions, sobrang being natural for them to do. As a director, you need to guide your actors to the vision that you want to do.
“Titimplahin mo, that’s why there were times when natural and genuine ang labas ng loveteam. Hindi pilit.
“The character of David was close to his personality, so that was not too hard for him to portray. You see their confrontation, it was very hard for both of them. Before we started to shoot, I studied his past shows and planned where I needed to adjust.
“I studied how I would handle David to bring out what’s good and the best in him. Alam ko may ilalabas pa siya. This one is just the preliminary offering for all of you.
“We’ll find out if That Kind of Love will make Pocket Media Productions a success. You can expect a sequel for this one.”
The confrontation scene of dating coach Mila (Milagrosa Maharlika played by Barbie) and rich businessman Adam De Dios (David) was the hardest for direk CC to execute.
“I don’t want to mention any spoilers, but let’s just try to support this film so we can reach more audience who will appreciate the rom-coms that we offer and they will return to the cinemas to watch movies again.”
‘That Kind of Love’ is not just a rom-com for the teeny-boppers, as insisted by direk CC. “Audiences will not just be thrilled to watch That Kind of Love,” said Direk CC. “There are sub-plots that are also heavy, real.
“Two different individuals searching for love. However, they cannot face reality. That’s the magic of love. I had fun directing Barbie and David because they are brilliant and intelligent actors. They listened they really respected my vision.
“They followed my instructions. Maybe, for any director, if your actors are like them, you will not have any problem. It won’t be hard for me. We had fun doing the film.”
Direk CC has worked as assistant director for ABS-CBN for more than two decades before she dauntlessly ventured into directing with Chances Are, You and I, with Kelvin Miranda and Kira Balinger that was shown last May.
It just so happened that when I planned for That Kind of Love, I considered Barbie and David to star in the project. But I didn’t know they were that big as a loveteam. When GMA entrusted a phenomenal loveteam to me.”
From Maria Clara at Ibarra to Maging Sino Ka Man, the #BarDa (Barbie and David), loveteam went on to make their first big screen project, That Kind of Love, that had Pocket Media Productions as producer and Regal Films as co-producer.
Direk CC is grateful to all the actors in That Kind of Love, including Kaila Estrada, Divine Aucina, Arlene Muhlach, Al Tantay and Ivan Carapiet.
“I am very grateful to all my stars because they embraced the concept of That Kind of Love,” said direk CC. “I didn’t see anyone who gave less of their passion and effort. I didn’t see anyone who invested less of their time to this film.”
The success of the BarDa loveteam today came as a big surprise to both Barbie and David, to think their partnership did not hit it off right away.
#BarDa was a slow burn partnership, but it eventually became strong especially after fans patronized their tandem.
That Kind of Love even became an entry to the Jinseo Arigato International Film Festival in Japan.
Barbie and David will be seen next in the period teleserye, Pulang Araw, with Dennis Trillo, Alden Richards and Sanya Lopez.
