PNP chief visits Rizal, Cagayan, orders in-depth probe into mayor’s killing
IN line with the directive of President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr, Philippine National Police chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil on Friday flew to Rizal, Cagayan tto review the progress of the investigation into the tragic assassination of Rizal Mayor Joel A. Ruma.
The top cop’s visit began with his arrival in Bgy. Gagabutan in Rizal municipality, where he visited the wake of the late Mayor Ruma to express his condolences to the grieving family.
He was joined by PNP Deputy Chief for Administration Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. and PNP Director for Operations Major Gen. Nicolas S. Salvador.
After offering his respects, the PNP chief proceeded to the crime scene in Bgy. Illuru Sur to gain firsthand insight into the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that every detail of the investigation is thoroughly examined.
Following the visit to the crime scene, he then engaged with members of the Rizal Muncipal Police Station and other concerned police units.
During this meeting, he emphasized the importance of a thorough and focused investigation, urging the team to remain diligent in their pursuit of justice.
“Our people’s safety is our responsibility, and they feel more secure when they see us on the streets, especially in areas with high tensions during election season. This is why we are ramping up our police visibility to ensure peace and order,” Marbil said.
Later in the day, the PNP chief attended the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) conference meeting, where updates on the investigation were shared.
The SITG, formed by Police Regional Office 2 director Brig. Gen. Antonio P. Marallag Jr. has been working tirelessly to unravel the circumstances surrounding the murder.
The task group is carefully examining evidence, including CCTV footages from the crime scene, and identifying potential witnesses, ensuring that all evidence is preserved for proper use in court.
Reaffirming the PNP’s dedication to seeking justice, Gen Marbil assured full support for Police Regional Office 2 and the SITG.
“We are dedicated to ensuring justice is served for Mayor Ruma, the two other victims, and the residents of Rizal, Cagayan,” he declared.
