BUREAU Corrections Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. has directed the agency’s intelligence, security and operations unit to thoroughly review its security policies and procedures to avoid security lapses.

This directive comes on the heels of an alarming attack on personnel from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) on April 7, which occurred along the Manila-Cavite Expressway.

The attack targeted a transport vehicle carrying Hu Yang, a 37-year-old individual deprived of liberty who faces serious charges, including violations of the New Anti-Carnapping Act and the Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

Hu Yang’s case is particularly concerning as he is allegedly associated with a notorious kidnapping syndicate known for its brutal methods, including torture and murder of victims.

Furthermore, he is wanted by Chinese authorities for his involvement in a kidnapping case in Jinjiang City.

In light of these events, Catapang’s commitment to bolster security measures reflects a proactive approach to prevent similar incidents in the future, ensuring the safety of both law enforcement personnel and the public at large. The review aims to identify vulnerabilities and implement more stringent protocols to safeguard the transportation of high-risk detainees effectively.

Although it was reported that six of the assailants were arrested, it is better to take precautionary measures, Catapang said.
