PNPTHE Philippine National Police (PNP) headed by General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil has reminded all licensed firearm holders to always exercise responsible gun ownership as they face life-time revocation of their permits in case they break the law.

Stiff penalties also await irresponsible gun owners, especially now that a nationwide gun ban is in effect in relation to the May 12 elections, said PNP Public Information Office chief Colonel Randulf T. Tuaño.

The reminder was issued following a road rage incident in Antipolo City two Sundays ago which left one dead and three others wounded.

As of last Sunday, official PNP records showed that more than 2,200 individuals have been arrested for violating the gun ban.

Majority of the offenders were apprehended during police responses while the rest were arrested in checkpoints, in anti-illegal drug operations, in buy-bust operations and other law enforcement operations.

More than 2,200 firearms have been confiscated as part of the PNP’s intensified efforts to crack down on illegal firearm possession and prevent gun-related violence.

Recognizing the present number of violations, Gen. Marbil said he is pushing for stricter penalties against those who irresponsibly use firearms.

The general is set to propose the perpetual disqualification from renewing a License to Own and Possess Firearms (LTOPF) and Firearm Registration for individuals involved in firearm-related offenses.

In addition, he is recommending the revocation of their existing LTOPF and firearm registration, ensuring that those who have demonstrated reckless behavior will no longer be allowed to legally own firearms.

“These measures align with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to strengthen firearms regulations and ensure that only responsible individuals retain the privilege of gun ownership,” Gen. Marbil said.

He also called on all gun holders to practice utmost patience and restraint, especially in heated situations, emphasizing that anger must never dictate one’s actions when carrying a firearm.

“Huwag tayong magpadala sa galit. Sa isang iglap, maaaring magbago ang buhay dahil sa isang maling desisyon.

Tandaan natin na nasa huli lagi ang pagsisisi kapag may nasaktan o napatay dahil sa hindi tamang paggamit ng baril,” Gen. Marbil added.

Col. Tuaño said they are urging all gun-owners to fully comply with firearms regulations and exercise extreme caution in handling weapons, reminding the public that the misuse of firearms carries serious legal consequences.

Law enforcement officers remain vigilant in monitoring and apprehending violators, and citizens are encouraged to report any incidents of illegal possession or reckless firearm use to the nearest police station or through the PNP’s hotline and official social media platforms, the official added.

Col. Tuaño said that with the May 12 national and local elections fast approaching, the PNP remains committed to ensuring public safety and security in line with the Marcos administration’s efforts to uphold the rule of law and protect the welfare of every Filipino.
