Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez is one with the country in giving a warm welcome to United States (US) Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who is on his first-ever visit to the Philippines.

“His presence reaffirms the deep, historic, and forward-looking alliance that has long bound our two nations in friendship and shared purpose,” said Speaker Romualdez, head of the House of Representatives with 306 members.

According to Speaker Romualdez, Hegseth’s visit happened at a critical moment in the region and that strengthens the desire to maintain peace, stability, and to uphold the rule of law in the midst of challenges and tension in the South China Sea.

“The high-level discussions between Secretary Hegseth and Philippine officials reflect a unified vision: to fortify our defense cooperation and preserve the principles of freedom of navigation and respect for international norms,” he added.

According to Speaker Romualdez, the security in the region is not the only aspect that would strengthen the alliance between the Philippines and the US.

“As Speaker of the House of Representatives, I believe this partnership should also serve as a platform for greater economic engagement – expanding trade, generating jobs, and creating opportunities that uplift the lives of ordinary Filipinos and Americans alike,” stressed the Speaker Romualdez.

He also encouraged the two countries to “move forward together, not only as allies in defense, but as partners in development – united by democratic values, inspired by common aspirations, and bound by a future we endeavor to shape together.”

“May Secretary Hegseth’s visit be a catalyst for renewed collaboration, as we work hand in hand toward a free, open, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific – one where all our peoples may thrive in peace and dignity,” said the leader of Congress.

According to the US Department of Defense, Manila is part of the Hegseth’s first visit to Asia. He would also be visiting Japan, Guam and Hawaii.

It said that the US Defense Chief visited the country to promote several security aspects with the leaders in the Philippines and to hold meetings with forces of the US and the Philippines.

“Secretary Hegseth’s trip comes as the United States builds on unprecedented cooperation with like-minded countries to strengthen regional security,” said Speaker Romualdez.
