TWO “persons of interest” in the rape and killing of a 23-year-old female tourist from Slovenia in Boracay Island are now under police custody.

“The two, who were arrested in an anti-illegal drug operations, are now undergoing questioning for their involvement in the rape-slay of Michaela Mickova,” said a Philippine National Police official who requested anonymity since he is not allowed to speak on the matter.

An examination conducted by the PNP Forensic Group showed that the victim from Slovenia, a country in Central Europe known for its mountains, ski resorts and lakes, was also sexually abused.

The victim’s body was discovered around 2:19 p.m. last March 12 in an old chapel at Zone 3, Sitio Pinaungon in Bgy. Balabag by local residents.

The local police was informed of the gruesome discovery more than an hour later.

The victim was lying supine, with her legs spread, underwear missing and her upper clothing rolled up when found. Her real cause of death is still to be released by the local police

An investigation showed that Mickova arrived in the world-famous island last March 1 to attend the wedding of a Filipina friend and her foreign fiancé.

A report from the Police Regional Office 6 said that the Slovenian was forced to travel to the country alone after her Egyptian boyfriend, who happened to be a friend of the groom, failed to get his Philippine visa on time.

Mickova’s Filipina friend reported her missing last March 10 after failing to contact her several times.

The victim was found in a chapel of the abandoned Pearl of the Pacific Hotel in Sitio Piaungon, which is located about a kilometer away from her hotel.

A local resident bothered by the foul stench coming from the abandoned establishment discovered the body of the victim.

PRO6 director Brig. Gen. Jack Wanky confirmed that at least two “persons of interes” in the rape-slay case, both local residents, are now undergoing investigation.

“Apparently, she met these two persons while in the island,” the official said.

Local police investigators are looking into robbery and rape as possible motives behind the killing of the victim.

Wanky, however, emphasized that the incident is an isolated case.

“This is not common, and it’s the first case of its kind recorded by Boracay police,” he said.

“We assure the public that Boracay Island remains a safe and secure destination, with law enforcement authorities committed to maintaining peace and order,” he added.

Prior to the discovery of the victim’s body, a P50,000 reward was offered for any information that would lead to her whereabouts.
