Se Christopher “Bong” Go attended the 50th Annual Convention of the Integrated Midwives Association of the Philippines, Inc. (IMAP), held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, on Monday, October 21, where approximately 3,000 midwives gathered to celebrate their contributions to healthcare and discuss advancements in midwifery practice.

IMAP is an organization of midwives and its event is a vital platform for sharing knowledge, enhancing skills, and promoting the well-being of mothers and newborns across the country.

Go, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography.

Go reaffirmed his unwavering support for midwives and their pivotal role in the healthcare system. He highlighted his legislative efforts to further empower midwives, including his filing of Senate Bill No. 2637, which seeks to update Republic Act 7392, or the Philippine Midwifery Act of 1992.

Go stressed that modernizing the law is crucial in ensuring that midwives are well-equipped with the latest tools and techniques to provide quality care. The bill is currently pending in the Senate Committee on Civil Service Government Reorganization and Professional Regulation.

“Midwives are at the forefront of maternal and newborn care, especially in rural areas. We must update existing laws to reflect the current challenges and equip our midwives with the necessary skills and support they need to perform their duties effectively,” Go said.

Go recognized the contributions of midwives during the pandemic and underscored his support for healthcare workers through the passage of Republic Act No. 11712, which provides Health Emergency Allowances.

As one of the authors and co-sponsors of the law, Go said, “Our healthcare frontliners, including midwives, deserve all the support we can provide. The Health Emergency Allowance is a testament to our commitment to safeguard those who safeguard our people.”

The senator also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to establish Super Health Centers nationwide, which aim to provide more accessible healthcare services to underserved communities. Go emphasized that these centers will enhance the capacity of healthcare professionals, including midwives, by offering vital maternal and childcare services closer to the people. .

The senator took the opportunity to acknowledge the officers of IMAP, led by President Dionica Saquilon, for their leadership in advancing the midwifery profession.

He also recognized the other key officers, including Executive Director Patricia Gomez, 1st Vice President Elda Cordero, 2nd Vice President Nelia Sarona, Secretary Elvie Estrada, Assistant Secretary Jacinto Managbanag, Treasurer Annie Lunio, Assistant Treasurer Lany Manaloto, Auditor Elizabeth Maniego, PRO Enriquita Bautista, and Clinical Expert Corazon Paras.

Go reiterated his full support for midwives and encouraged them to continue their vital work, assuring them that he will remain steadfast in advocating for legislation that benefits healthcare workers and ensures better health services for all Filipinos.
