CAVITE CITY – Former Cavite City Mayor Bernardo “Totie” Paredes who earlier planned to return to power on Thursday withdrew his candidacy.

Newly-installed Interior and Local Government Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla Jr. personally accompanied Paredes to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the city to withdraw his candidacy, along with former Rosario, Cavite Vice Mayor Jose Rozel Hernandez.

According to Secretary Remulla, he encouraged Paredes to join him at the DILG to become one of his special assistants.

The camp of incumbent Mayor Denver Chua rejoiced at the withdrawal of the city’s long-time chief executive.

Paredes, along with his running mate and vice mayoral aspirant Penchie Consigo, and daughter barangay chairwoman Apple Paredes, filed their candidacy on October 8, 2024.

“Sa tagal ng aming pinagsamahan, malugod ko pong tatanggapin ang bagong landas na ito para sa magandang layunin natin sa ating bansa,’ Paredes, in a social media post, said.

“Ika nga ng aking kaibigang SILG Jonvic Remulla: ‘With his wealthy experience of 18 yrs. of being a mayor malaki ang maitutulong n’ya sa aking department,” Paredes added.
