Health workers

DON’T look now, but even the Commission on Elections (Comelec) wants health workers to be represented in Congress.

As members of Congress, health workers are seen to craft pieces of legislation that reflect the concern over the health of the people

Acknowledged as “medical frontliners,” they play a “vanguard role” in ensuring the health of the people, notably the poor in the countryside.

We, thus, commend the Comelec for allowing a group of health workers to run for party-list seats in next year’s off-season elections.

The poll body granted the appeal of Health Workers Party-list (HWP) after initially dismissing its petition for registration because of a technical defect.

“Tama lang ang desisyon ng Comelec dahil sa dami ng health problems na kinakaharap ng bansa at taumbayan,” said a barangay health worker (BHW) in Pangasinan.

“Kailangang may ‘eyes and ears’ ang health workers sa House of Representatives,” according to the long-time BHW.

HWP is among the 41 groups included in the Comelec’s official list of accredited party-list groups for next year’s elections.

Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said that “it’s good that they are given a chance to participate in the elections.”

Without doubt, the poll body’s decision is a welcome development in government efforts to ensure the health, safety and welfare of Filipinos.

Dapat lang.
