Pension

Good news

THE good news is that the country’s barangay officials may now become members of the Social Security System (SSS).

In fact, SSS President and Chief Exeutive Officer (CEO) Rolando Macasaet wants all barangay authorities covered by the system.

These public servants serve their constituents for many years, but when they retire from the service, they do not get any pension.

“Now, through the SSS membership, we are offering you an opportunity to get a monthly pension when you retire from being a barangay official,” said Macasaet.

He urged these overworked public servants to secure a social security number and start paying at least P120 in monthly contribution.

Likewise, aside from retirement benefits, SSS members are entitled to sickness, maternity, disability, funeral and death benefits.

Actually, the state-run SSS administers social security protection for workers in the private sector.

We, thus, commend the government, through the SSS, for showing genuine concern for the welfare of barangay officials, notably chairmen and councilmen.

Records show that there are more than 42,000 barangays across the country.

Unlike regular government employees, village officials and personnel work round-the-clock throughout the year, receiving only a meager monthly honoraria.

Allowing them to become SSS members is a move in the right direction.
