THE nation goes to the polls anew on May 12, 2025 to elect a total of 18,271 government officials, including 12 senators.

Aside from the 12 senators, 63 party-list members of the House of Representatives are considered national candidates.

The other positions to be filled are 254 district representatives, 82 governors, 82 vice governors, 792 provincial board members, 149 city mayors, 149 city vice mayors, 1,582 city councilors, 1,493 town mayors, 1,493 town vice mayors and 11,498 town councilors.

Also to be elected are 32 members of parliament of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and 40 BARMM party-list representatives.

Under the Omnibus Election Code, national candidates and their leaders may start campaigning 90 days before election day.

The local candidates, on the other hand, have 45 days to campaign.

We are made to believe that the Filipino electorate, particularly the youngsters, has been moving towards political maturity.

Doubtless, the public wants to see the election of candidates who are capable of speeding up the country’s socio-economic development.
