Lucena City, Quezon – Senate Majority Leader Francis ‘Tol’ N. Tolentino led the distribution of financial assistance to residents displaced by Typhoon Aghon in this city.

At the same time, Tolentino encouraged Lucenahins to stay positive, have faith, and draw strength from their ordeal as they recover from the aftermath of the strong typhoon.

The senator, together with local officials led by Mayor Mark Alcala, Vice Mayor Dondon Alcala and city councilors, handed cash aid to 600 residents of Barangay Market View, this city, whose houses were damaged by flooding at the height of the typhoon.

“It is said that those who go through tough challenges in life are also bound for better destinations. Let us acknowledge that all these unfortunate events are part of God’s plan, and that we will have a better destination ahead of us,” Tolentino stated.

The senator said that he fully understands the struggles of communities affected by natural disasters, as he shared his own experiences in dealing with Taal, an active volcano, as former mayor of Tagaytay City.

He also related how he helped craft the disaster resilience and preparedness plan for the National Capital Region as chairperson of the Metro Manila Development Authority.

While dealing with his new responsibilities as Senate Majority Leader, Tolentino said that he makes it a point to visit communities being tested by calamities. He plans to visit Negros Oriental and Occidental to assess the situation of those affected by Mt. Kanlaon’s recent eruption.

For his part, Mayor Alcala expressed gratitude to the senator for going out of his way to help his kababayans – and for distributing wheelchairs to senior citizens and persons with disability.

“It encourages us to see someone from the national government coming over here to see our situation, and provide help. In times like these, we wholeheartedly accept all the assistance we can get.

Let us thank and pray for more people in government like Sen. Francis Tolentino,” the mayor stressed.
