THE government hopes to win the battle against poverty by coming up with various measures aimed at addressing the unemployment problem.

In fact, the Filipino people, notably members of the labor force, welcomed the reported decline in the nation’s unemployment rate in December.

The drop in the jobless rate coincided with an increase in the size of the labor force to 52.33 million in December, from 51.47 million in November.

This translated into a labor force participation rate of 66.6 percent in December, from 65.9 percent previously.

The country’s labor force is composed of individuals 15 years and above, men and women, who are looking for a job during a period.

As expected, the Christmas shopping season provided a big number of seasonal jobs in December, according to reports.

And National Statistician Claire Dennis Mapa said these seasonal workers get to retain their jobs until the first quarter of the new year.

We believe that President Marcos’ administration has concrete plans of action on how to fight unemployment.

Aside from fine-tuning the dollar-oriented overseas employment program, the government is determined to generate more local jobs.

This is aimed at lessening our dependence on the manpower export industry to meet the employment needs of the burgeoning population.
