THE public supports government efforts to address the growing homelessness in this Southeast Asian nation.

The government, through the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD). is doing everything to address the problem.

In the metropolis, the DHSUD plans to repurpose container vans, where squatters can reside while the government completes their new homes.

The informal settlers will live in these “staging areas” for for at least one year to two years.

DHSUD Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar said the government is constructing 170,000 houses for informal settlers in the National Capital Region (NCR).

While construction is ongoing, the national government plans to temporarily relocate these squatter families to the so-called “staging areas.”

The Department of the Interior and Local Government, on the other hand, said LGUs had been asked to identify idle government lands in the NCR.

The idle government lands will be used for both the housing program and “staging areas,” according to DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos Jr.

Certainly, the government of President Marcos is on the right track.
