THE Department of Education pushed through with the opening of school year 2024-2025 yesterday.

However, around 842 schools delayed the opening of classes due to impact of Super Typhoon Carina and southwest monsoon.

Teachers, students along with their parent trooped back to schools nationwide early Monday morning.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had urged schools to open on July 29 as planned, except for those heavily affected by Carina.

The DepEd said around 842 schools in Regions 1,3,4-A,12 and the National Capital Region (NCR ) postponed school opening yesterday.

All schools in the cities of MArikina, Malabon, Pasig and Valenzuela, 15 schools in Quezon CIty, 13 in San Juan, five in Manila and two in Navotas have decided to delay the school opening.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara visited schools in Carmona, Cavite on the first day of school to personally assess the opening of classes.

According to the data presented by the DepEd, a total of 842 schools postponed opening of classes affecting 803,824 learners.

Angara added that schools who defer their opening may hold make-up classes.

On Sunday, a teachers’ group appealed to the local government units (LGUs) to “reconsider” the date of school opening in their localities to give parents, students, and teachers more time to prepare for the school year.

The group said a one-week delay would not only give families more time to address their issues but also provide the DepEd with the opportunity to prepare thoroughly.

Based on DepEd’s enrollment data, there were 19,870,531 students enrolled in both public and private schools, including state and local universities and colleges (SUCs/LUCs), and the Alternative Learning System (ALS).

Majority of students in the country were still enrolled in public schools at 17.3 million.

Most of the enrollees came from Calabarzon at 2.8 million, followed by Central Luzon with 2.2 million and the National Capital Region with 2.1 million.

This school year is in preparation for the return of the old school calendar.

As SY 2024-2025 is scheduled from July 29, 2024 to April 15, 2025, the next academic year is set to begin on June 16, 2025, and will end on March 31, 2026.
