A 52-YEAR-OLD Zamboanga City police captain on Monday was recorded as the 66th COVID-19 fatality in the Philippine National Police (PNP) after 29 days of fighting for his life.

PNP chief, General Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar announced that the Police Commissioned Officer succumbed to the virus around 5:22 a.m. Sunday while undergoing treatment at the Doctor’s Hospital Zamboanga.

The officer developed a sore throat last April 24 followed by fever and body pain two days later. Last April 30, he was subjected to an RT-PCR test at the Philippine Red Cross Molecular Lab in the city and he tested positive for the virus.

He was admitted to the hospital the following day and was transferred to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit due to difficulty of breathing and was intubated last May 22 until he passed away.

The 66th fatality’s death was diagnosed to be the result of COVID-19, critical pneumonia, severe hypoxemia, pulmonary fibrosis, multiple organ failure and septic shock.

As of Monday, the PNP Health Service headed by Brigadier Gen. Luisito P. Magnaye said it has recorded 116 new cases bringing the total to 23, 983 since March last year with 1, 850 ‘active cases’ still being monitored by PNP doctors and nurses.

A total of 73 recoveries were also noted bringing the total of police personnel who have fully recovered from the disease and are now back in full duty status to 22, 067.
