Zaldy Co steps down as House Appropriations Committee chair
Due to health reasons
REPRESENTATIVE Zaldy Co announced on Monday his decision to step down as chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, citing health concerns as the primary reason behind his resignation.
“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the majority in Congress for graciously accepting my decision to step down as Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations. This decision, made with a heavy heart, is driven by pressing health concerns. The highly demanding nature of my role has taken its toll, and I now need to prioritize seeking the medical attention necessary for my well-being,” Co said.
Co expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve in the influential role and underscored his contributions during his tenure.
“I have always served at the pleasure of the majority. I am deeply honored to have been entrusted with the immense responsibility of steering the nation’s budget in service of the House of the people and the constituents we represent,” he said.
In his three years as chair, Co highlighted several key achievements, including the Ayuda sa Kapos ang Kita Program, which provided critical financial support to low-income families.
He also emphasized his role as the sponsor and shepherd of the 2023, 2024, and 2025 national budgets, ensuring alignment with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s eight-point economic agenda.
“Notably, securing funding for legacy initiatives in health, housing, and food security—particularly legacy hospitals and contract farming—will remain highlights of my service,” Co stated.
The veteran legislator concluded by thanking his colleagues and constituents for the “extraordinary privilege to serve,” as he focuses on his recovery.
Co’s resignation marks a significant transition for the House of Representatives as it navigates the national budget and priority legislation for the remainder of the 19th Congress.
