THE woman was petrified. Her younger brother had paid her a visit – not to chat and bring gifts, but to allegedly hack her and her children with a shining, sinister bolo. Like an evil game, the housekeeper soon realized it was a case of ‘killed or be killed.’

In apparent defense, the 37-year-old housekeeper shot and killed her younger brother after he reportedly tried to hack her and her children inside their house in Davao de Oro, Police Regional Office (PRO) 11 Director, Brigadier General Benjamin H. Silo Jr. said yesterday.

The suspect, Mariel Bialao, reportedly took a caliber .45 pistol hidden in their cabinet drawer and fired a shot at her brother Mario, a 23-year-old farmer, killing the latter on the spot.

The incident took place inside the Bialao residence in Barangay Doña Josefa in Laak, Davao de Oro, around 6 p.m. Thursday, said the PRO11 director.

An investigation conducted by the Laak Municipal Police Station showed that prior to the shooting incident, the victim, who was armed with a farm bolo, went to his sister’s house and started harassing the latter and her family.

When the victim attempted to hack the woman and her children, the latter ran to their room and grabbed the pistol hidden in their cabinet and used the weapon to shoot the victim.

The younger Bialao suffered a single gunshot wound in the chest and died instantly.

Shortly after the incident, the woman surrendered to the local barangay captain who turned her over to the Laak police for proper investigation and filing of criminal charges.

Silo said the investigators recovered a caliber .45 semi-automatic pistol with a magazine containing five live ammunition and a 19-inch-long bolo at the scene. The source of the fatal weapon is still being investigated as of press time, the official said.
