ILAGAN City — Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Christine Hallasgo ruled the women’s open 10,000m event, Fil-American Angel Frank topped the women’s open 400m and University of the Philippines bet Sally Campus dominated the 5,000m walk in the ICTSI-Philippine Athletics Championships at the Ilagan City Sports Complex here Thursday.

Hallasgo captured the gold medal in the 10,000m with a time of 36:38.54 against 40:09.20 of Art Joy Torregosa of Cebu City and 40:58.24 of Ailene Tolentino of Philippine Army.

“Nakikita ko po iyong improvements sa training ko, especially ngayon na na-break ko yung personal best ko. Maganda po siyang preparation for the 42.” said Hallasgo, the 30-year old pride of Malaybalay, Bukidnon.

Hallasgo, who represents Ilagan City in the week-long competition sponsored by ICTSI and CEL Logistics, also improved her previous best time of 37:19.51 which she set in the SEA Games Trials Meeting in Pasig City last year.

“Sumali din ako sa Tokyo Marathon kaya PB ko rin yung time ko duon tapos ito nasundan po ngayon. Ito na yung huling competition na sasalihan ko bago ang SEA Games,” said Hallasgo.

Frank recorded 53.69 against Danae Manibog’s 54.73 for the gold medal.

Hoang Thi Minh Hanh of Vietnam settled for the bronze medal with a time of 54.94.

“There were a lot of foreign participants, but it definitely surprised me to see how many people came, especially from different nations. It added more excitement and just hype to run fast and represent my school and the Philippines as well,” said Frank, who turned 22 yesterday (March 23).

“It’s definitely nice to be part of the national team. I know I had to go through it the way that every Filipino citizen and person does it by running at the national meet, so I decided this is the best way to do it,” Frank added

Meanwhile, Nani Sahirah Maryata of Malaysia recorded her personal best in her first crack by winning the women’s shot put with 14.69 meters.

Maryata beat Jamela De Asis of University of Santo Tomas (12.50) and opening-day winner Aira Teodosio of City of Ilagan (12.36).

The 20-year-old Maryata also announced that the distance she recorded is a new Malaysia national record as well as a newmeet record.

“I am so happy,” said Maryata. who joined Malaysian national team only this month.

Also, Umajesty Williams bagged the gold medal in the 400-metre.

Williams, who represents Ilagan, timed 47.15 to beat Frederick Ramirez (47.40) and Michael Carlo Del Prado (47.41).

Amazing, I have a lot of fun. Everyone I raced against were very nice people, very good competitors. They were always very supportive even.though they’re running against me. And we all just wanted to have a good race and run as fast as we all could.” said the 23-year-old Williams.
