SPECULATIONS on what national position Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio is eying for will soon be known before weekend.

Lakas-CMD president and House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez said this in a press conference a day after Mayor Sara took her oath as a new member of the Lakas-CMD.

Meanwhile, Romualdez said he sees no conflict between Mayor Sara and former Senator Bongbong Marcos since the two are “close friends.”

Romualdez said whatever is the decision of Mayor Sara will be accepted by the party, which played a vital role in the success of two presidents — Fidel V. Ramos and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

“We continue to hold consultation and meeting but whatever her decision will be, we will support her. Of course we always wanted the highest position but we will respect her personal decision,” Romualdez said.

“The Lakas-CMD is here to provide her all the support she needs, for her future success and for the nation-building,” the House leader added.

Since the substitution rule will end on November 15, Romualdez said the presidential daughter may issue her final decision over the week-end.

“The position that she will run for will be known most likely within the weekend. A bit of patience as we make preparations and consultations with Mayor Inday Sara and the party leadership,” he stressed.

Last Thursday, Mayor Sara joined Lakas-CMD, which according to Romualdez the invitation was made for her since 2018.

Also last Thursday, Mayor Sara left the regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago which she and some big politicians from Davao region has created.

In the case of Lakas CMD, it has fielded its executive director Anna Capela Velasco and member Lyle Fernando Uy as presidential and vice-presidential candidates.

On the other hand, Romualdez told House media that there will be no conflict should there be a face-off for the presidency between the two personalities.

“I don’t foresee a conflict. Mayor Sara and Senator Bongbong Marcos are good friends. They’ve been communicating. They’ve been in dialogue. I don’t see them having a conflict, therefore I don’t foresee myself getting caught in the middle,” Romualdez said in an interview.

“Rather, if we can be part of putting her under Lakas [and] in alliance with other parties with similar thoughts and vision of nation-building then I will be lucky and honored to be a small part of this process. But then again, we have to wait for what will happen over the weekend but I’m sure this would resolve itself very positively,” he added.
