Weather forecasts
THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) hopes to forecast the weather for the next 14 days instead of the current five days.
This PAGASA will do by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) in weather forecasting, according to the secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
In fact, the government is currently in the midst of developing the AI- improved weather forecast, said Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum Jr.
Solidum made the statement during last Wednesday’s Senate deliberations on the proposed budget of DOST and its attached agencies, including PAGASA, for 2025.
“Once we are able to develop the AI-improved weather forecast…our target is 15 minutes, but every five days, PAGASA releases a rain forecast (and) we want to make that l4 days with the use of AI,” he added.
Solidum said it is easier to forecast the weather in a continent compared to an archipelago.
In an archipelago, such as the Philippines, there are many water systems and many sources of weather sytems, he said.
And reccords show that every year, the country is visited by an average of 20 typhoons and storms, including destructive ones.
Without doubt, the use of AI in weather forecasting is a welcome news in this country of more than 110 million election-crazy people.
