Vice President and Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sara Duterte did not show up at the signing ceremony of a law for the additional bonus for teachers, in Malacañang on Monday.

VP Sara’s office also did not give a reason why the vice president skipped the congressional enactment of RA 11997 or the “Kabalakit sa Pagtuturo Act”, which was signed by Pres. Marcos.

It was learned that the purpose of the law is to increase from P5,000 to P10,000 the annual bonus of teachers so that they can buy teaching materials such as chalks, erasers, pens, ballpoint pens, and others.

Malacañang also had no answer to the media’s question as to why Duterte could not attend the important event.

But some legislators who refused to be identified, think that VP Sara is angry with the congress because of the elimination of his confidential intelligence fund.

House Speaker Martin Romualdez’s office also refused to comment on the issue.

Meanwhile, some senators, led by Senate President Chiz Escudero, and Speaker Romualdez along with several congressmen attended the said occasion.

The media also noticed that only a low-ranking DepEd official attended the signing ceremony.
