Villar should ponder on lessons from MVP, Lopezes

ALL these speculations about the so-called Villar TV channel that will replace ABS-CBN are actually worthless. We can’t help but laugh at some of the presumptuous stories coming out that are all mere hypothetical speculations.

It’s rumored that Willie Revillame will be the head of the new Villar channel and he’s now pirating some stars to join them. It’s also reported that so many talents are now sounding off to him that they are available to work with him and the Villars.

It’s said that even talents who work behind the camera and other former workers of ABS-CBN are making “paramdam” to Willie, so they can work with him. But Willie himself denied this and said: “Hindi ako nanunulot ng sinuman.”

There’s also a rumor that Toni Gonzaga, who resigned from ABS-CBN’s PBB after her high profile participation in the BBM rally, is sure to transfer to Villar TV to host a drama anthology show similar to Charo Santos Concio’s “Maaalaala Mo Kaya”. Grabe, ang layo agad ng itinakbo ng kuwento ni Toni ha. Kakaribalin na ngayon si Charo. E, si Mel Tiangco?

There’s also a scuttlebutt that Aga Muhlach, Piolo Pascual and John Estrada are also sure to transfer to the Villar channel, along with broadcaster Anthony Taberna who said “pipiratahin yata ako”. Even Korina Sanchez has expressed her willingness to move to the new TV station, declaring her doors are always open.

But like what we’ve said, all these are just useless imagined fantasies. As Willie himself declared: “Niluluto pa.” After all, it’s not that easy to put up a new TV channel. Just because you’re getting big, big stars does not mean your shows will rate.

Manny Pangilinan now knows this when he took over TV5. He recruited so many big stars like Sharon Cuneta, Nora Aunor, Derek Ramsay, Aga Muhlach, etc. but none of them succeeded in putting TV5 on top. So, eventually, he bowed out from the race after losing the billions he invested in his quest to be an entertainment mogul.

Even now that TV5 is trying to capture audiences anew with the help of Cignal TV and outside producers like Cong. Albee Benitez’ Brightlight Productions, Cornerstone and Viva TV, the ratings of their entertainment shows are still not as spectacularly high as they would want it to be.

So if and when Villar TV starts its operations, it will be an uphill battle as it is like they are giving birth to a new channel. ABS-CBN itself experienced this when the Lopezes regained control of their network after the Marcoses were ousted in 1986.

A big help to them then was Mother Lily Monteverde who lent them her Regal Babies and her production people during their rebirth pains. It took a while before the Kapamilya network recaptured its supremacy in the industry and Regal also helped them in putting up their own film company, Star Cinema, that eventually became the numero uno production outfit in the country.

Will Willie Revillame be the Freddie M. Garcia (the president of ABS-CBN Corporation then) and Charo Santos Concio (who replaced FMG) that will help catapult the Villar network to success? That, of course, remains to be seen and only time will tell if the Lord would will it.
