UST, NU in winning starts

DEFENDING men’s champion University of Santo Tomas took the solo lead after two rounds, while National University’s title-retention campaign in the women’s division is off to a winning start in the UAAP chess tournament at the FEU-Diliman Sports Complex over the weekend.

With top board Julius Gonzales leading the charge, the Growling Tigers scored similar 4-0 wins over Ateneo and Adamson a maximum of eight points.

Reigning MVP and WFM Allaney Doroy, meanwhile, powered the Lady Bulldogs to a 4-0 win over Adamson last Sunday after drawing a Saturday bye.

Far Eastern University holds the lead in the women’s side with 5.5 points following a 2.5-1.5 squeaker over La Salle in the opener and 3-1 conquest of University of the Philippines the following day.

La Salle and UP are in joint second in the men’s division with five points.

The Green Woodpushers topped the Blue Eagles, 3-1, after opening their campaign with a 2-2 draw with Far Eastern University.

The Fighting Maroons settled for a 2-2 stalemate with the Tamaraws after beating the Falcons, 3-1, in the first round.

UST is running second in the women’s side with 4.5 points following 2.5-1.5 win over Ateneo in the second round, and a 2-2 opening day draw with La Salle.

Action in high school chess, meanwhile, opens after a three-year absence tomorrow, with NU opening its quest for a third consecutive girls title against UST at 2 p.m., simultaneous with the FEU Diliman-Adamson tie.

The boys opening day fixtures are UST-Ateneo and Adamson-La Salle Zobel.

FEU-Diliman drew an opening day bye.
