UPIS student makes waves in Batang Pinoy

ILOCOS SUR— Aubrey Tom of Rizal emerged as the first triple-gold medal winner in the Philippine Sports Commission-Batang Pinoy by winning the girls’ 400m individual medley at the Quirino Stadium pool in Bantay here Sunday.

Tom, who captured two gold medals in the 100m free and 200m IM the previous day, clocked five minutes and 31.10 seconds in ruling the girls 400m IM to hike her total to three.

The 15-year-old Grade 10 University of the Philippines Integrated School student came up short of her five-gold effort in the last edition of the Batang Pinoy in Puerto Princesa, Palawan three years ago.

But the pride of Cainta said she was happy to get back into swimming again.

“I think i was more prepared in 2019 more than right now because I topped swimming and I was almost quit, but i just can’t live without swimming,” said Tom.

Equally impressive was Sophia Angela Mae dela Vega of San Jose City, who struck in the centerpiece event of athletics with a golden leap of 4.77 meters in the girls’ long jump.

Dela Vega shone brightest in the field of 37 jumpers, including Jesalyn Materdan of Masbate and Angelica Jane Balason of Quezon City, who took the silver and bronze medals with 4.52m and 4.37m, respectively.

The 15-year-old Dela Vega, who is being coached by her mother Romina De la Vega ruled the girls 13-15 long jump after posting 4.77 meters.

De Guzman timed 46:48.768 to beat Tuguegaro City’s Davine Novo 46:48.928 and Bulacan’s Mica Angela Montaos 47:43.752

Novo and Montaos settled for silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Sharing the spotlight was Marintanya Krog, the 13-year-oldt sibling of former national riders Rex and Mathilda who captured the girls’ 13-and-below gold in 37:43.519.

Krogg finished ahead of Iloilo’s Maria Louise Alejado (39:12.067) and Calapan’s Jhanah Abella 39:16.426 in the race that started and finished in front of the Provincial Capitol.

“Pangarap ko pong maging national team at makalaro sa ibang bansa,” said Krog, a Grade 9 student of Baesa High School.

Emmanuel Arago topped the boys 13-under.

In weightlifting, Elaine Jane Calunsag (26kg) of Bayawan and Hannah Shene Cabalida (30kg) of Cebu City captured gold medals in their respective categories.

Calunsag had a total lift of 55kg, including 20 in snatch and 35 in clean and jerk.

Alexa Bacaro of Cebu City settled for silver after scoring 24 in snatch and 30 in clean and jerk and Reynadine Marie Jimenez of Zamboanga took the bronze with 22 in snatch and 29 in clean and jerk.

Cabalida ruled the 30kg with lifts of 34 in snatch and and 40 in clean and jerk for 74kg.

Elizabeth Tarro had a total lift of 69, including 28 in snatch and 41 in clean and jerk to clinch the silver..Elaire Paulene Colonia of Zamboanga Del Sur settled for bronze with 52 including 22 in snatch and 30 in clean and jerk.
