Typhoon ‘Nika’ spoils Christmas tree lightings in QC
TYPHOON Nika has “spoiled” the jovial moods of Quezon City residents who were expecting a festive Monday simultaneous Christmas Tree lighting at the city hall grounds and QC Memorial Circle.
Mayor Joy Belmonte canceled the event after the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) raised storm signal 1 in Metro Manila.
Belmonte on recommendation of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CRRMC), also ordered the suspension of classes at all levels both public and private schools to include Child Development Center.
Typhoon “Nika” made landfall at Dilasag, Aurora at around 8:10 a.m. yesterday.
Signal number 4 has been raised over several areas in Luzon, indicating very strong winds with widespread damage potential.
Aside from the Christmas Tree lightings, Belmonte and Vice Mayor Gian Sotto were about to grace the other scheduled events such as the openings of the Paskong Masaya, Paskong QC Night Market and the Christmas Animated Display at the QC Hall grounds.
Instead, Mayor Belmonte advised her constituents to stay at home for their own safety.
