Two in a row for Creamline
BERNADETH Pons was in the zone as Creamline posted its first winning streak in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference, tripping Chery Tiggo, 25-20, 24-26, 25-16, 25-19 at the Philsports Arena last night.
The Cool Smashers recovered a tough defeat in the extended set by securing the next two behind Pons’ career game to tie the Crossovers at 2-1 in Pool A.
Earlier, Farm Fresh edged out Galeries Tower, 25-22, 35-37, 23-25, 25-20, 15-10, to enter the win column.
Pons hammered 25-of-55 kills and collected 23 receptions and seven receptions in her best game since her PVL debut in the Invitational Conference last year.
Creamline was able to hurdle its biggest test of the tournament as it continued to miss its main offensive weapons Jema Galanza, Alyssa Valdez and Tots Carlos, as well as middle blocker Pangs Panaga.
“Sobrang happy kasi yung preparation nakita sa game,” said coach Sherwin Meneses, whose Cool Smashers hardly missed a beat despite the postponement of their match last Thursday due to inclement weather.
American Erica Staunton scored 21 points, Michel3 Gumabao had 17 points while Bea de Leon had two blocks for a 12-point effort for Creamline.
Colombia’s Yeny Murillo led the Foxies with a stellar 29-point performance, including eight points in the decisive fifth set. She also collected 16 receptions and 10 digs.
“I’m very happy,” said Farm Fresh’s coach Shuta Sato through an interpreter.
Cait Viray and Trisha Tubu each had 18 points, while Aprylle Tagsip was the other Foxies player in double digits with 15 points. Viray and Tagsip combined for nine of Farm Fresh’s 16 blocks.
Maica Larozza, the Foxies’ fourth overall pick in the PVL Rookie Draft, fired two service aces, including the match winner that closed out the two-hour, 42-minute contest.
