Traffic rerouting in Commonwealth Avenue

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will deploy 1,360 personnel to guide motorists on the rerouting scheme to be implemented along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City for President Rodrigo Duterte’s last State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday.

MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos said assigned personnel are composed of traffic enforcers, Road Emergency Group personnel, Motorcycle Patrol Units and Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group. Abalos also ordered the distribution of raincoats to protect them in case it rains on Monday.

“The MMDA is in close coordination with the Presidential Security Group, Quezon City Police District and Department of Public Order and Safety to ensure a peaceful and orderly SONA,” said Abalos.

Meanwhile, motorists are advised to take alternate routes to avoid expected heavy traffic along Commonwealth Avenue and the vicinity of Batasang Pambansa Complex.

Northbound vehicles from Elliptical Road going to Fairview should take North Avenue, Mindanao Ave., Quirino Highway, Commonwealth Ave, to destination while southbound vehicles from Elliptical Road can take Commonwealth Avenue, Quirino Highway, Mindanao Avenue, North Avenue to destination.

Motorists driving light vehicles northbound to Fairview via Marikina may also opt to take Elliptical Road then turn right to Maharlika, left to Mayaman, right to Maginhawa, left to C.P. Garcia, right to Katipunan Ave., left to A. Bonifacio Ave., straight to Gen. Luna Ave., turn right to Kambal Road, left to GSIS Road, left to Jones St., right to Gen. Luna Ave., straight to A. Mabini St., turn left to Rodriguez Highway, left to Payatas Road to destination.

For light vehicles, from C-5 left turn to Magiting, right turn to Maginhawa, left to Mayaman, Kalayaan to destination while for trucks, Katipunan/C-5, C-5/Luzon, Congressional Ave. to destination.

The MMDA will open zipper lanes or allow counterflow of vehicles along Commonwealth Avenue at the UP Techno Hub and Tandang Sora to accommodate the volume of vehicles on the northbound lane.

To guide motorists on the use of zipper lanes, plastic barriers and traffic cones shall be installed.

Ambulances, tow trucks, military trucks and other resources will be placed on standby in case of any untoward incident that may happen.

Earlier, the MMDA conducted clearing operations to remove illegally-parked vehicles and other road obstructions along Batasan Hills, Litex Road, Tandang Sora, Visayas Ave, Congressional Avenue, C-5 Road, Magiting, Maginhawa, Mayaman and Kalayaan.
