AFTER assuming office on June 30, the successor of President Duterte ought to “prioritize the eradication of graft and corruption” in government offices and agencies.

This, if the new Chief Executive, who will be elected by the voters on May 9, and his Cabinet, want to succeed in speding up the country’s socio-economic development.

In the view of various quarters, including the millions of registered voters, the incoming administration should never tolerate grafters to continue serving in the government.

We cannot overemphasize the importance of demonstrating our determination to stamp out wrongdoing in the bureaucracy to restore the people’s confidence in the government.

Well-meaning Filipinos said those who persist in their corrupt ways must be dealt with forcefully and immediately, knowing full well the many problems confronting the country.

“Baka yong kukunting pera ni Juan dela Cruz ay mapunta pa sa mga malalalim na bulsa ng mga tiwaling lingkod-bayan,” according to a worried barangay official.

And it is only just and proper for the new government officials, led by the successor of President Duterte, to modernize Philippine agriculture if we are to achieve food security.

Modernizing agriculture, in our view, is a major factor in winning the uphill battle against hunger and poverty in this Southeast Asian nation of more than 110 million people.

With a huge foreign debt and a devastated economy, the Philippines needs dedicated public servants, who are not willing to sacrifice principle at the expense of convenience.

In other words, with so many Filipinos now in the grip of extreme poverty, there’s that urgent need for the new administration to rid the government of corrupt men and women.
