THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) has suspended the implementation of its cashless toll collection program.

Described by many, notably motorists, as “anti-poor,” the program was originally scheduled to resume March 15.

Under the program, vehicles passing through expressways must be equipped with radio frequency identification.

More popularly known as “RFID,” it enables the motorist to settle his/her toll fees digitally, according to reports.

But the problem is not all motorists hasve the financial capability to maintain a certain level of RFID load balance.

This is one of the reasons why new DOTr Secretary Vivencio Dizon ordered the suspension of the implementation of the program.

Dizon said he would like to coordinate with tollway operators to make sure that everything is ready for the implementation of the cashless tollway payments.

The tollway operators are Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation and San Miguel Corporation (SMC).

The new DOTr secretary wants to check the readiness of the toll plaza infrastructure and all the scanners can properly read RFID stickers.

And we agree with Dizon when he said that the contactless payments system would be more efficient before going totally cashless on tollways.
