SENATE Majority Leader Francis ‘TOL’ Tolentino commended Iloilo’s honest cabbie, whose story went viral after he chose to return a bag containing P2.4 million in cash to his passenger who inadvertently left it inside his taxi.

“He chose to do what is right, even if the money could have helped him and his family,” said Tolentino, who interviewed Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas on the senator’s regular radio program, “Usapang TOL” this morning.

In response, Treñas shared that the local government had feted the taxi driver, Anthony Aguirre, by rewarding him with a financial incentive, and by naming him an honorary resident.

“He is from the neighboring town of Pavia, but he works in Iloilo City, and so now he has become one of our ambassadors,” said Treñas.

Tolentino noted that commendable acts by ordinary citizens, like what Aguirre did, help raise a city’s reputation as a safe community composed of honest and hardworking people.

He added that the viral story of the honest cabbie reflects well on Iloilo City – especially as it celebrates the Dinagyang Festival.

One of the country’s most colorful and anticipated celebrations, Iloilo’s Dinagyang Festival attracts scores of local and foreign tourists every year.
