TNT rolls back Blackwater
TALK N Text celebrated its return from a long break and rolled back Blackwater, 106-93, in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Mikey Williams and Aaron Fuller provided the 1-2 punch for the Tropang Giga, who played well despite a long break due to the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers enroute to their third straight win and a 5-4 win-loss record.
Williams finished with a team-high 23 points while Fuller added 16 points and 22 rebounds to climb into a share of sixth place with Barangay Ginebra.
More importantly, the win boosted TNT’s chances in the tight battle for the twice-to-beat advantage given to the top four teams at the end of the elimination round.
The Tropang Giga need to win against Terrafirma and NorthPort next week to give themselves a chance at a Top Four finish.
The Tropang Giga led throughout the game, but had to keep their focus to avoid a letdown against a team with nothing to lose.
TNT coach Chot Reyes was visibly pleased with the victory.
“I told the team that these are the games I fear the most, when everyone expects us to win, the odds are stacked in our favor. These are the games I dread the most,”said Reyes in an interview posted at the official PBA website.
“All I asked was to make sure the other team doesn’t outwork us and I’m glad we started fast,” added Reyes, who called the shots for Gilas in the FIBA qualifiers.
RR Pogoy, who missed the previous four TNT games before suiting up for Gilas, added 16 points.
Ryan Reyes also had 16 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting.
Import Shawn Glover finished with 26 points, 15 rebounds, nine assists and two steals for Blackwater, which dropped to 0-10.
The Bossing are in danger of suffering a winless campaign for the second straight conference with solo leader Magnolia Pambansang Manok as its last opponent.
The Bossing also went down to a record-extending 29th straight defeat.
Jvee Casio had 21 points in a losing effort for Blackwater.
