Timely warning

AS the country’s top law enforcement agency, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is supposed to uphold the law and maintain the highest standards of integrity.

And so the other day, hard-hitting PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil warned his officers and men to stay away from illegal POGOs across the country.

Various quarters described General Marbil’s stern warning as “timely,” noting that even government-licensed POGO facilities are engaged in illegal activities.

Raided POGO hubs, particuarly those in Bamban, Tarlac and Porac, Pampanga, were found involved in scamming, human trafficking, torture and prostitution.

Marbil issued the warning amid allegations that some cops either turned a blind eye or in cahoots with POGO operators in their respective areas of responsiblity.

“Any police personnel involved in protecting illegal POGO operations will face appropriate disciplinary actions,” he said.

Integrity and accountability, he said, are the “cornerstones of our public service.”

Marbil assured the public that the officers and men of the PNP, which is civilian in nature but national in scope, will uphold these values.

As well-meaning Filipinos, we salute our men and women in uniform for serving the country and people with integrity, loyalty and efficiency.
