PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil reaches the mandatory retirement age of 56 on Febuary 7 (Friday).

However, reports said President Marcos may extend the term of office of Marbil, drawing cheers and applause from various sectors.

Those pushing for extension of Marbil’s term said it would not be advisable to change the PNP chief during the election period.

The election period started on January 12 and ends on June 11. However, the campaign period for the forthcoming polls only begins on February 11.

This is for national candidates (senators and party-list groups), while local bets may start campaigning on March 28, which is 45 days before May 12.

DILG Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla was earlier reported to have hinted of the possible extension of General Marbil’s term.

Remulla said “the biggest reason, I think, is the mid-term elections.”

Of course, we agree with Remulla, a native of vote-rich Cavite, that “you cannot shake things up now that the campaign period is about to start.”

“Pero na kay Pangulong Marcos pa rin ang desisyon kung mananatili sa puwesto si Heneral Marbil,” according to an elderly Marcos loyalist.

And everybody ought to respect the Ilocano Chief Executive’s decision.
