Chances are good your child wasn’t always like this. They were probably a sweet tempered and affectionate baby. Then one day, things started to change. Maybe you woke up in the middle of the night to find them staring at you, eyes glowing. Or maybe you found them levitating in their bed one night. No matter how it started, if you’re here you’re probably wondering “is my child possessed by the devil or some other demon?”

If this is the case, then check out this step by step guide to determining if your child is possessed by a demon, for a comprehensive list of warning signs of demon possession, as well as advice specific to child possession.

Disclaimer, please do not attempt to perform an exorcism on your (or any!) children you believe to be possessed by demons. If you are genuinely concerned for your child’s safety or well being, please seek professional help immediately.

Possessed1Make Sure It’s Not Just Behavioral Problems

Before you start brandishing rosaries and quoting biblical text, it’s important to make sure this is genuine possession you’re dealing with, and not just your run of the mill behavioral problems. To be certain, the next time your child acts out in a manner you believe to be ‘demonic’ try binding that spirit by calling it out. For example, if you’re child’s name is Jane,

“Jane, I bind that spirit of (anger, fear, impatience, rebellion, etc.) tormenting Jane in the name and blood of Jesus Christ. I now loose peace, love and joy over Jane in Jesus Christ’s name.”

If you see your child snap out of it and look at you confused, as if they weren’t sure what had just happened, then there’s a good chance there’s a demon involved.

• • Make Sure It’s Not A Mental Illness

Before we go any further, it’s also important to rule out mental illness as an explanation for your child’s behavior. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, mental illness and possession are very different,

“Exorcism is directed at the expulsion of demons or to the liberation from demonic possession through the spiritual authority which Jesus entrusted to his Church.”

“Illness, especially psychological illness, is a very different matter; treating this is the concern of medical science.”

• • They See Things That Aren’t There

Does your kid claim to see things that aren’t there? Does she regularly have tea with her ‘imaginary friends’ Beelzebub and Aamon? We’ve all seen the movie with the pale little kid that sees dead people, but we’re not talking about just your run-of-the-mill ghosts. If your child starts mentioning blood on the walls or speaks in a gruff voice to strangely named imaginary friends, you could be looking at demonic possession.

GraveyardDo They Have A Strange Connection To Graveyards?

Does your child wake with fright every time you pass a cemetery in the car at night? Or if you pass during the day, do they scream that the voices are too loud? Maybe you have the opposite problem, and your child suddenly spends all their time skulking around the local mausoleum, obsessed with death and dismay. Either way, your child could be dealing with possession, especially if they seem overly agitated following the encounter.

PssessionLook For Mild Signs Of Possession

Are you frequently woken by your child’s bloodcurdling screams, guttural noises, or their glowing eyes peering out at you from the dark? Maybe your child has been excessively vomiting, saying strange things, or has a sudden fascination with all things morbid.

These are all mild signs of possession, and may be cause for concern. Try taking your child to church or another holy ground and see how they react.

PrayerTry To Cleanse The Child With A Prayer

If your child’s possession doesn’t seem too extreme, you can try to cleanse them with a prayer. Taunt your demonic adversary with an extremely long prayer, and eventually he or she will reward you with a reaction. The demon will see you as an adversary, and come ready for a fight.

So prepare yourself, things could get messy. But if your child comes at you with fists flying during your prayer, you can be certain this is genuine demonic possession you’re dealing with.

SignLook For Extreme Signs Of Possession

Maybe you wrote off the initial signs off your child’s possession as weird coincidences or unexplainable illnesses. But, it’s hard to dismiss your child fainting with their eyes rolled back in their had as they levitate several feet above the ground. These are extreme signs of possession.

If you walk into the room and find your child rapidly and unnaturally moving their limbs, spinning their head around 360 degrees, or speaking in tongues, you’re most likely dealing with a demon.

DemonMake Sure It’s A Demon And Not A Ghost

So you’re pretty sure you’re dealing with possession? Before you can take the next step to getting rid of that demon, you need to get your facts straight. Dealing with a ghostly possession is different than that of a demon. According to Spiritual Research Foundation,

“Being affected by ghosts (demons, devils, negative energies, etc.) means there is no direct control by the ghosts over the mind and intellect of the affected person.”

“Demonic possession is when a ghost controls the mind (emotions or thoughts) and intellect (decision making ability) of a person by merging with the person’s consciousness. As a result, they also control the person’s actions.”

So, if your child’s body, mind, and spirit all seem possessed, then you’re in demon country.

OuijaFind Out If The Child Has Played With A Ouija Board Recently

Now, if you’re pretty sure this is possession you are dealing with, then it’s time to figure out where that pesky demon came from. Is it possible that your son or daughter has been playing with a Ouija bored lately? Ouija boards are marketed as children’s toys now, but have long been used as a method of communicating with the dead – or perhaps the undead.

Multiple religious organizations have warned against using the ‘game’ because they suspect it may cause demonic possession.

Possession1Assess The Severity Of The Possession

Now that you’ve read all the warning signs and ruled out any other causes for your child’s bizarre behavior, it’s time to assess the severity of their possession. You can tell if your child has mild to moderate possession by seeing if their behavior calms temporarily in the presence of a church or temple.

You can also offer your child holy water to drink, and see if that helps. If your child’s possession is mild, then a spiritual healer should be able to cure them.

ProfessionalsCall In The Professionals

If your child is experiencing severe possession, then it might be time to throw in the puke-stained towel and call in the professionals. According the the Spiritual Research Foundation, a serious possession of demonic nature would require a much higher level of spiritual healing.

For the most serious cases only a literal saint would be capable of curing the possessed child. Although you’re pretty much a saint for having dealt with your demon-child this long, it may be time to call in a professional!
