Tanza cops nab 7 for ‘spider sabong’
TANZA, Cavite – Seven men were apprehended by operatives of Tanza Police on the act of illegal “spider sabong” (spider fighting) in Barangay Julugan 1, Sunday, March 27, 2022.
Police Lt. Col. Gerry Laylo, Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Tanza PNP (Philippine National Police) identified the arrested suspects in violation of PD. 1602. (illegal gambling) as Jeffrey Sarabia, 41, male, married, tricycle driver; Ruel Nazareno, 61, male, married, pedicab driver; Thovee Duarte, 21, male, single, jobless; John Gerald Torregoza, 24, male, single, an Internet service provider employee; Glen Espayos, 19, male, single, fisherman; Luisito Alcaraz, 64, male, married, jobless; and Ignacio Abanday, 68, male, married, therapist.
SDEU (Station Drug Enforcement Unit) Operatives of Tanza MPS (Municipal Police Station) conducted an anti-illegal gambling operation that led to the arrest of the suspects who were caught in the act of betting in an illegal spider fight and the confiscation of P1,440 worth of gambling money, three boxes containing live spiders and different paraphernalia for spider fight according to investigator-on-case PCpl. Edzel Manalo.
Spider “sabong” in Cavite is an old game of young people inherited from their ancestors and currently still being played, however, others are accompanied by bet money that causes gambling.
